During these rather tumultuous economic times we want to make sure folks know to contact us for assistance. If you are not in our catchment area we will help you find a more local source for support and will supply you with emergency food if needed. Please do not hesitate to contact the food pantry. Call either 436-0641 or 436-6161 to speak with Margie or Diane or to leave a message. We will return your call. The hours of operation for the pantry are Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 am to 2 pm and Thursday from 2 pm to 6 pm. Because we are very busy these days we request that you call to make an appointment. We need proof of residency and a photo ID. Our catchment area is Portsmouth, Greenland, Stratham, Newington, New Castle, Rye, the Hamptons and Seabrook.

Thanks to St. John's Masonic Lodge

2010-04-26 15:25:32

I want to send my profound thanks to St. John’s Masonic Lodge on the corner of Middle and Miller Streets in Portsmouth for their exciting “Out of Hibernation” 5K held for our benefit on Saturday the 24th. They even arranged for the day to be glorious and the crowd to be substantial! Thank you race committee lead by Dan Stolworthy and Dan Silverman and to all St. John’s Masons for your work and impressive organization. It was a wonderful event and two of our board members even ran it without significant injuries! What a great morning. Community support like this is crucial to the Seacoast Family Food Pantry being able to fulfill its mission to assist individuals and families who need help with food and personal care items. Just a few weeks ago we held our Spring Food Distribution and served nearly 160 families – a record number--consisting of 365 people including 108 children under 18 and 48 individuals over the age of 60. We got support for that event from the North Church of Portsmouth, the Seacoast Mother’s Association who were our baking brigade and supplied us with delicious homemade desserts and so many other loyal contributors to this agency. As with the Masonic event last weekend we are always humbled by the considerable community support we receive from our friends at Piscataqua Bank, Seacoast Local H(eat) Campaign, St Thomas Aquinas High School’s “Charity Dress Down Day”, all the friends who remembered our irreplaceable Board Member Maire McLaughlin, the Guild at Portsmouth Hospital, the many folks who were so generous during Macy’s Bag Hunger campaign and the countless other businesses, families, schools, churches and organizations who keep us open for business. We live in a unique community and are proud to be a part of it. Diane Giese Executive Director

Frugal Feast Thank You

2010-03-21 08:35:27

I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who made our Frugal Feast such a success on Saturday night, March 6th. First kudos to the Masonic Lodge on Middle and Miller Streets for hosting the event and to Phil Fraser who worked for days to prepare a very yummy home made meal. Thank you Me and Ollie's for the great bread, Bayside Distributing and Samuel Adams for the potent potables and Eco-Movement for supplying us with compostable table ware and for taking all the detritus off for composting at the end of the evening., Common Man restaurant, you rock for not only offering to create salad for the whole dinner but for sending Erika and Amanda to construct the salads on the spot and to serve them. We raised funds with a successful silent auction thanks to Ambrosia Gardens, Bella Sol, the Bratskeller, the Breakfast Hill Golf Club, The Balsams Grand Resort, Breaking New Grounds, Cranmore Mountain, The Dolphin Striker, Fat Belly's, Kern Electric LLC, Lew Roberts, Margarita's Mexican Restaurant, Marion Cheney, The Meathouse, The Muddy River, The Music Hall, The Oarhouse, The Palace Theater, Petey's Summertime Seafood, Planet Fitness, The Portsmouth Spa, Quicksilver Fine Jewelry and Gifts, The River House Restaurant, RiverRun Bookstore, Riverworks Tavern, The Rusty Hammer, Sagamore Golf, Sanders Lobster Company, Saunders at Rye Harbor, The Seacoast Rep, Shenanne Tucker, State Street Saloon, Thomas Leighton and Wing-Itz. How lucky we were to have Robert Egger of the DC Central Kitchen speak and mingle with the crowd. He is a charismatic presenter with great wit and a great message. Not only did he found the DC Central Kitchen which has served something in excess of 18 million meals and has trained hundreds of homeless and out-of-work people for restaurant careers, but he has far-reaching interests in the health of non-profits in general. More information may be found on him at www.robertegger.org. Kate Kern and Miles Burns entertained us with their considerable musical talent. Thank you to the many volunteers and friends and families who supported us for the evening and support us in so many ways throughout the year. We are truly fortunate.

New Recipe Program

2010-03-21 08:33:25

Each month Seacoast Family Food Pantry will prepare a simple recipe and gather all the ingredients needed to prepare this dish. Both the ingredients and the recipe will be available to clients when they visit the pantry. We are beginning with a simple lasagna recipe and hope that everyone who tries it will enjoy this meal!

History

Seacoast Family Food Pantry was organized in 1816 as the Ladies Humane Society. Originally intended to assist the families of fishermen this agency has been redefined and renamed numerous times evolving eventually into the Seacoast Family Food Pantry in early 2007. This name was chosen to better describe our mission and to be a more clearly named organization to clients and supporters as well. Today the Board of Directors, staff and volunteers are committed to serving the Seacoast by vigorously responding to the food, personal care and nutritional needs of our community.
